Nature Versus Technology

Background: Our world is surrounded by nature and aesthetic beauty, which we once used to appreciate. In the past, people valued nature for its purity, reality, and most of all tranquility. However, since the rapid advancement in technology, especially after the 1990s, things have become bizarre. People have turned their backs to nature, which once used to be reality, and are now immersed into a new world of imagination, through technology.

My inspiration: As a college student living in Appleton, I was astonished that I had never really appreciated the beauty around me. Although surrounded by astounding qualities of nature, such as the Fox River, and the picturesque bundle of trees, I never took the time out to go and examine such beauty. For a while, I wondered why I had neglected nature just the other students, until I finally realized that it was not the nature at fault. Rather, it is the technology and our ignorance that has come along with it, and has driven us away from reality and appreciation.

Statement of Purpose:  After conducting sufficient research on the Internet and also observing surrounding nature, I produced a video, depicting how nature has evolved under the influence of technology. The video begins by showing how nature once used to be tranquil, realistic and intimate to humans. However, ever since the rapid development of technology, humans have turned their backs to nature. Rather than appreciating nature, we have started relying on technology, which indeed has empowered nature, and will continue to, as it keeps advancing. Hence, while technology is taking over, though it may be beneficial, we should also be aware that it conflicts with nature. Therefore, through this video, I hope to make my viewers conscious of the inverse relationship that both nature and technology carry amongst each other. The more the technology develops, the more it invades our nature, thus creating a wall between humans and reality (nature).

Synopsis: In this video, the inverse relationship between nature and technology exhibits the on-going struggle that humans are facing today. The more technology is developing each day, the more we are relying on it, and thus failing to appreciate the realistic and tranquil nature we once used to believe in.

Here are some videos that I found as research to include in my found and made video:

Technology literally devouring nature:

Technology VS Nature:

THIS is the FINAL product of my Project:

  1. Anam, I really like the idea behind your project, and I think it is an incredibly important issue that we are facing today. The technologies which led into modern technologies were not developed with sustainability and harmony with the natural world in mind. Now, we have to change so many of our existing tools in order to make them more sustainable. I do think there is an answer; that there is a way in which technology could be made to work in harmony with nature. It does not have to be an issue of 'technology vs nature' but it is unfortunate that it is that way currently.

  2. The sound and visuals combined to convey the conflict. The video may be stronger without the text as the message is clear as the viewer takes in the flow of aggressive images and intense music. The video reminded us of the old dumps that would be in Wisconsin woodlands. People would dump old washing machines, furniture, glass bottles as if nature could make them disappear or its expansiveness would make the trash seem negligible. The stuff remains in piles. It will take a long time for that attitude to go away.
